The symbol of Sečovlje Salina Nature Park
At the Sečovlje salt-pans, the Little Egret can be seen througout the year, but does breed here.
Individually, or in small groups, they feed in shallowly flooded salt-fields or along the channels' margins. The Little Egret's plumage is entirely white, legs and bill are black, feet bright yellow. The bill is equipped with a special gland, which enables the bird to to get rid of surplus salt, which accumulates in it while picking food from salt water. As seawater clearly presents no difficulties to the Little Egret, it is not surprising that this is the commonest heron in the pans. And this is the reason why it is depicted as the symbol of Sečovlje Salina Nature Park in its logo.
