Salinity
Salinity is a characteristic and significant property of sea water. It is a measure for the content of all salts in grams diluted in 1 kg of brine.
Usually it is expressed in % or ‰, which correspond to the weight share of all salts in total mass of a solution. In salt-making, salinity is calculated from density and is used in almost all salt-pans. It is expressed in Bé° (Baumé).
At 20°C, the correlation between relative density (RD) and Bé° for liquids is:
• heavier than water: RD = 145 ÷ (145- Bé°)
• lighter than water: RD = 140 ÷ ( Bé°+130)
In older sources, the value 144.32 is used at a temperature of 15.5°C instead of the value 145.
