RED-BREASTED MERGANSER
Mergus serrator
Sawbills were given their name due to their longish and thin bills indented like a saw. With these »teeth«, the birds are able to retain the caught fish in their bills.
Red- breasted Mergansers overwinter mostly along the coast, in bays and in river mouths, less often in the interior. At the Sečovlje salt-pans, they can be observed at sea in front of the pans and in some larger salt-pan basins. They arrive in November and stay here until the end of April. At times, the winter is spent here by several tens of these birds.
