Kentish Plover

Kentish Plover

Charadrius alexandrinus

is the bird of saltmarshes; on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts it occurs on sandy beaches, in mudfields and salt-pans, while in the Pannonian Plain it inhabits saltsteppes. This barely 16 cm large bird is classified as endangered in Europe and a very rare breeder in Slovenia. Its most important nesting grounds in our country is the Sečovlje Salina, where a few dozens are known to breed. In the salt-pans it can be seen from February to October.
