COMMON TERN
This bird is one of the best and certainly the most elegant fliers. In Europe, it breeds dispersedly, in Slovenia only here and there in its northeastern part and in the Sečovlje Salina.
From its wintering sites on the African coasts it returns in April. In the salt-pans, a few dozen pairs are known to breed. The summer showers often wash away the terns’ eggs from the levees and the little islets. This is why special nesting platforms have been built in some Fontanigge salt-fields.
