This snake is the black subspecies of Dark Green Snake Hierophis viridiflavus.
It inhabits the Slovene littoral region, Istria, and Dalmatia. Hierophis viridiflavus carbonarius is extremely fast and agile, and highly bellicose when forced to defend. When irritated, it bites rapidly and vigorously, not ready to relent easily. It is a day species, living in dry, rocky and overgrown places. Quite often, it is found along old walls. At the Sečovlje salt-pans, it resides in the ruins of the abandoned salt-pan houses.
