For their permanent inhabitants, which spend most of their lives on bare and saline grounds, the Sečovlje salt-pans are not particularly hospitable. This means that small mammals, in contrast to their larger relatives, cannot avoid numerous inconvenience

The pans are inhabited by the Lesser White-toothed Shrew, Eastern European Hedgehog, House Mouse, Harvest Mouse, Black Rat and Pygmy White-toothed Shrew. Some rare bat species, however, have been observed here as well.
