Exhibition Six-Feet Wonders In SSNP Photographic exhibition on butterflies and grasshoppers is opened in the gift-shop at Lera/SSNP until 20 July. The author is photographer Anja Čop who – with assistance of Stanislav Gomboc, experts on butterflies and grasshoppers – took pictures of these interesting creatures. Gomboc has previously investigated the butterfly and grasshopper fauna of Secovlje Salina and was surprised to find almost 1000 butterfly species. According to his view, such diverse fauna of insects in the Secovlje Salina is also result of careful management with dryland habitats in the area within the frame of LIFE MANSALT project. The extend of semi-dry areas, forming appropriate habitat for halophyte communities, has been increased in the recent years. Salt-loving plants are important for some butterfly species. Milestone exceeded! LIFE MANSALT project: 81 workshops since the start of the project! Pupils from the primary school in Murska Sobota, who participated at the educative LIFE MANSALT workshop in SSNP where the importance of saline environment for breeding of endangered bird species, especially Terns, is presented, were the 81 pupil's group attending these workshops. Planned number of 80 workshops within the duration of the LIFE project is thus already reached. How to preserve a colony of terns in Sečovlje Salina against a numerous population of Hooded Crows and other aerial predators? At the end of the last century, the Hooded Crow was not a common bird in Sečovlje pans. Since then, however, the population of these birds increased tremendously. They live and nest on the edge of the saltpans, in areas where a growing number of human waste provides them with plenty of food. This was not the case in the past as the harsh winters decimated their population. Today, there are also less natural predator of crows, mainly hawks, which naturally regulated the crow population. Invasive alien plant species in the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park Due to the development of technologies and reduction of distances that were once insurmountable for the spread of certain species, a number of non-native species is increasing. These species do not spread in a natural way, they immigrate in our country with a human help. First nutrias in Sečovlje Salina Nutria is a kind of aquatic mammal, native to South America. In the last century, it was already introduced to Europe, where it was cultivated primarily for its fur. Numerous animals have escaped from captivity, settled in waters throughout Europe, where environment apparently suits them and furthermore, they rapidly proliferate. It will be made of stone, while its main role will be to protect the southern part of Fontanigge against uncontrollable flooding by water that can come either from the Drnica and Dragonja catchment (as was the case during the last floods in September 2009) or from the sea (disastrously high tides in December 2008). A demanding reconstruction of sea defence walls between the salt-pans and the sea Within the LIFE+ MANSALT project, works on the reconstruction of sea defence walls, which separate the pans from the sea, are also taking place. The main objective of LIFE + MANSALT project is to conserve biodiversity in SSNP. Public awareness raising workshops Within the LIFE project 80 workshops are to be organised, at which not only the special features of the area’s biodiversity will be presented, but also the purpose of the LIFE project as well as the advantages and significance of the Natura 2000 network for the conservation of species and habitats according to the conservation and sustainable use principle, which enables people and the living world to live in harmony. Implementation of implicit sanation work for habitat conservation The impacts of the September 2010 floods in the Dragonja Valley are well visible in SSNP as well. 7 million Euros for the preservation of Sečovlje Salina Nature Park Seča, November 19th, 2010 – The firm SOLINE Pridelava soli d.o.o. present the »MANSALT – Man and Nature in Sečovlje Salina« project, designed for long-term biodiversity conservation of in the area of the Sečovlje pans. Grain by grain, the hen fills her belly! SSNP is an area with well emphasized lasting interlacement of man with nature, which no doubt has high ecological, biotic and landscape qualities. SSNP is therefore a nature park as well as part of Natura 2000 areas, which link the areas of nature conservation in the EU that were formed in order to provide for survival of the most precious European plant and animal species and habitats. As the salt-pans were co-created by man, he is also obliged to maintain them regularly. The reconstruction of emankments within the LIFE project has been earmarked for providing control over the water regime that is essential for the pans’ living world. At the same time, all works must be implemented in the traditional manner which, of course, enables the area’s landscape characteristics to be preserved as well. Within the project’s framework, the employed have cleared a plot of land on the edge of the park, where they carve stone that is to be built into the ancient walls along the channels. The LIFE project provides for a new life for the local population Starting with October 1st, 2010, 21 new workers, mostly local construction workers, were employed within the LIFE project framework. In the ensuing five years of the project’s actual duration, they will participate in major reconstruction jobs on the embankments, with which a control over the salina’s water regime will be ensured. It has started! In Sečovlje Salina Nature Park (hereinafter referred to as “SSNP”), the first implementation work planned within the LIFE project framework began on the embankments. According to the planning phase, which includes additional training of the employees and the carried out implementation work, the Soline d.o.o.’s workers are currently constructing a rock sea-wall, which will protect the stone wall at Picia, in the area that boasts great diversity of species and habitats at Lera. European funds for Sečovlje Salina Nature Park At the end of 2009, the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park applied for a project within the EU’s LIFE + nature and biodiversity call for proposals. The five-year project entitled “Man and Nature in Sečovlje Salina” was eventually confirmed by the European Union, and the project designed to conserve biodiversity in the area of Sečovlje salt-pans began to be implemented on October 1st, 2010. In the adjacent part of the building, sanitary facilities as well as drink dispenser are available to the visitors, while the larger room in the back part of the building will be turned into an attractive multimedia room by this summer. Mowing of levees and grasslands In the winter of 2003/2004, most of the levees along the main salt-pans' channels were mown after more than a decade. Building and maintenance of border ditches at Fontanigge These ditches, which once upon a time already ran along the borders of the Sečovlje salt-fields, will prevent land animals (e.g. martens and cats) to reach the nests of salt-pan birds on the little islands in the middle of salt-fields. Sanation of transverse levees in evaporation basisns at Lera The sanation is carried out with a small working machine; the reconstructed levees are made entirely of earth material.
