Exhibition Six-Feet Wonders In SSNP http://www.kpss.si/en/news/life/exhibition-sixfeet-wonders-in-ssnp Photographic exhibition on butterflies and grasshoppers is opened in the gift-shop at Lera/SSNP until 20 July. Gomboc has previously investigated the butterfly and grasshopper fauna of Secovlje Salina and was surprised to find almost 1000 butterfly species. According to his view, such diverse fauna of insects in the Secovlje Salina is also result of careful management with dryland habitats in the area within the frame of LIFE MANSALT project. The extend of semi-dry areas, forming appropriate habitat for halophyte communities, has been increased in the recent years. Salt-loving plants are important for some butterfly species. SSNP is therefore a nature park as well as part of Natura 2000 areas, which link the areas of nature conservation in the EU that were formed in order to provide for survival of the most precious European plant and animal species and habitats. As the salt-pans were co-created by man, he is also obliged to maintain them regularly. The reconstruction of emankments within the LIFE project has been earmarked for providing control over the water regime that is essential for the pans’ living world. At the same time, all works must be implemented in the traditional manner which, of course, enables the area’s landscape characteristics to be preserved as well. Within the project’s framework, the employed have cleared a plot of land on the edge of the park, where they carve stone that is to be built into the ancient walls along the channels.
