Professor. Dr. Stjepko Golubič visited the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park
On Friday, 13 July 2012, the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park visited world-renowned expert Professor. Dr. Stjepko Golubic of Boston University in the USA.
Professor. Dr. Stjepko Golubic comes from Biological Science Center, Boston University, USA. He was born in Zagreb, where he also received his doctorate in biology in 1963, but otherwise many years living and working in the U.S. He was part of a team of researchers who have more than 30 years ago passed one of the first studies to petola and the production of salt in the salt pans of Sečovlje. His research concerns the relationship between microorganisms and mineral deposits. It is by nature ecological and interdisciplinary, involving aspects of paleontology, sedimentology, and geochemistry. His interests include the role of phototrophic microorganisms in carbonate deposition and dissolution, ecology of modern stromatolites, biokarst formation, and use of microborings as paleoenvironmental indicators. Special interest focuses on diversity of cyanobacteria in the ecological context, reconciling molecular and phenotypic characterizations. At Lera, he visited the research field of Marine Biology Station in Piran, where various research are going on. Impressed was the by the Visitors' Centre (MMC), and he took a tour to the Fontanigge area by boat.
Professor Golubić said after the visit that he is very excited about the present state of the KPSS.
