Invasive alien plant species in the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park
Due to the development of technologies and reduction of distances that were once insurmountable for the spread of certain species, a number of non-native species is increasing. These species do not spread in a natural way, they immigrate in our country with a human help.
The most known to the public among such species is perhaps a ragweed plant, which is even causing health problems for people who are allergic to this plant. It is typical for non-native plant to rarely proliferate beyond the natural boundaries in its natural environment; there are always various environmental factors that prevent the species to excessively reproduce. However, when they migrate on the wheels of train compositions, in containers on transatlantic flights or in tanks of large transatlantic ships from other environments to our climatic conditions, the new environment often lacks of natural factors that would prevent their excessive proliferation.
Within the framework of the LIFE MANSALT project, we perform regular monitoring of habitats and vegetation. Among the studies that have been carried out, there is also a list of non-native and invasive plant species, which was made by Peter Glasnović and his colleagues. They have listed fifteen non-native and invasive plant species. Fortunately, none of them excessively threats the domestic flora due to its proliferation at the expense of native species.
Nevertheless, the monitoring issue of occurrence and spread of non-native and invasive species will require a special attention within the management of the SSNP.
