The sandwich tern is present in Slovenia mainly during the wintering period.

It regularly winters along our coasts. It is mainly present along the coastal area between Piran and Izola and from Koper to Debele Rtić.

In the Sečovlje salt pans it is present all year round, singly or in small groups, exclusively in the sea in front of the salt pans. Within the salt pans, at Fontaniggee, it is only present during the breeding season. It has been observed several times at breeding sites, mixed colonies of common terns Sterna hirundo and little terns Sternula albiforns.

* In the Sečovlje saltpans it is considered a qualified species with a favourable conservation status.
