The flamingo is extremely rare in the interior of Slovenia. It is more common along the seashore, especially in winter.
In the Sečovlje salt marshes, it is a regular fly-over and overwintering species. It first appeared here on 20 November 2005 and spent a month here before mysteriously disappearing. On 31 July 2005, this flamingo was ringed as a juvenile near Izmir, Turkey. In recent years, it has been occurring in small or large groups of up to more than 200 individuals, mainly in the larger salt pans. Data on ringed flamingos show that flamingos come to us from Turkey, France, Spain and Italy.
*In the Sečovlje salt pans it is considered a qualifying species in favourable conservation status.
