Sečovlje Salina Nature Park
ManagementLocation: The park is located in the extreme south-western part of Slovenia, right next to the border with Croatia, in the southern part of the Municipality of Piran. The northern part of the park, where salt production still takes place, is called Lera. It is separated from the southern part of the park, called Fontanigge, by the channel of the Grande Canal. The salt pans are bounded to the north by the channel of the St Jerome Canal, to the east in large part by the embankment of the former narrow-gauge railway, and to the south by the St Odorik Canal, which today carries the Dragonja River, diverted into it some years ago. To the west, they are protected by the sea dykes of the Gulf of Piran.
The area of the Landscape Park: 673 ha
Ownership: Republic of Slovenia, a small part by the Municipality of Piran and private owners.
Settlements and inhabitants in the area of the landscape park: 0.
Managed by SOLINE d.o.o., on the basis of a concession for the management of the park.
Conservation areas in the park: the first conservation area, comprising the Fontanigge area, the second conservation area, comprising the Lera area, and the third conservation area, comprising the immediate surroundings of the salt pans.
Influence area of the park: the drainage basins of the Dragonja and Drnica rivers and the water area of Piran Bay, including the Seča peninsula and the northern slope of the Savudrija peninsula.
Part of the Fontanigge area: cultural monument of national importance - Museum of Saltworks.
Status of the site under nature conservation legislation:
- Ecologically Important Site - EPO: Sečovlje Saline with Seč (id. no. 75200), Regulation on Ecologically Important Areas (Official Journal of the RS, No 48/04, 33/13, 99/13 and 47/18);
- Special Protection Area (Natura 2000 site): Sečovlje Salt Pans, SI 5000018, Sečovlje Salt Pans and the Dragonja Estuary, SI 3000240, Kanal Sv. Status of the site on the basis of the regulations on the protection of cultural heritage:
- Museum of Saltworks in the Sečovlje Salt Pans (EID 1-3697): cultural monument of national importance with an area of influence (Decree declaring the Museum of Saltworks a cultural monument of national importance, Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No 29/01, and 16/08 - ZVKD-1);
- Sečovlje - Sečovlje Salt Pans (EID 1-07868): a cultural monument of local importance covering the entire area of the park (Decree on the Declarations of the Sečovlje Salt Pans Landscape Park, Primorske novice, Official Gazette Nos 5/90, 26/90 and 16/92; the Decree applies in so far as it relates to the protection of cultural heritage);
- Seča - Villa maritima Cape Seča (EID 1-26281): cultural heritage: registered archaeological site comprising Cape Seča with the area of the Skvera and the area of the mouth of the estuary of the St. Jernej Sea.
