A characteristic species inhabiting the salt basins is the Brine Shrimp, no more than a centimetre long bright red type of plankton.
Well adapted to the high salinity of the water in the basins is also the Mediterranean Killifish Aphanius fasciatus. Quite common in the water are the Marine Crab Carcinus aestuarii and the decapod crustacean Marsh Shrimp Upogebia littoralis.

The saline pools and highly saline water of the pans’ basins are inhabited by Brine Shrimps, which under favourable conditions rapidly increase in numbers through unisexual propagation.

This turtle is a rare and endangered species in Slovenia, for it can still be found only at Ljubljansko barje, in some places in Bela krajina, and on the edge of the Sečovlje Salina.
