In the winter of 2003/2004, most of the levees along the main salt-pans' channels were mown after more than a decade.
Prior to mowing, the lush bushes and trees that had to be removeded from separate sections of the levees. Namely, the root system of certain bushes and trees may cause cracks in the levees, which is the reason why the sscrub and tree vegetation on the levees has to be thinned and maintained. Regular mowing of grass, on the other hand, strengthens the roots of grasses, which thus bind the levees more firmly and increase their resistance to erosion.
