The Sečovlje Salina is best known for its birds which, however, are of course not its only inhabitants.
The Sečovlje salt-pans’ habitats are also home to many small animals, and many amongst them live only here as far as Slovenia is concerned. The salt marshes virtually seethe with life. The shallow saline water is inhabited by numerous bristleworms, crustaceans, bivalves, larvae of some fly species, and a whole series of living beings, which are highly inviting diet for the pans’ birds. In the area of the pans we can see some bee species, which can in fact be found only here in the entire country. The halophilous plants also host several species of herbivore bugs. The reeds are inhabited by the Spider Cicada and short-winged slender bugs. On the wet salt-pan mud, shorebugs are often seen running.
A characteristic species inhabiting the salt basins is the Brine Shrimp, no more than a centimetre long bright red type of plankton.

So far, 291 bird species have been established at the Sečovlje salt-pans. And why can we find so many different birds here? The salt-pans constitute a large water body, which the birds use as their roosting site or wintering grounds.
